Labu Sayong Through Generations: Hanis’ Journey to Preserve Tradition.
Nur Hanis binti Muhammad Nasir, a second-generation entrepreneur leading Kraft Hanis Labu Sayong in Kuala Kangsar, is on a mission to bring this traditional art to the forefront. Her family’s business, founded by her parents over 24 years ago, began humbly with their first product, an egg holder that remains popular to this day.
In 2010, the rise of online competitors led to a drop in sales. Determined to revive her father’s labu sayong products, Hanis began promoting them on Facebook in 2013, reaching a wider audience.
The response she received online was overwhelming, marking a turning point that led Hanis back to her hometown to rebuild the family business. "Selepas PKP, saya cari macam mana cara untuk naikkan sales, dan sebab itu saya buat program Interactive Kraft Seramik, di mana kita boleh mewarna atau pun hands-on," Hanis shares, describing her innovative efforts to capture the interest of younger generations.
As a practitioner of this traditional art, Hanis also highlighted the difference between modern and traditional techniques. Traditional methods, such as "teknik picit," require skilled hands to shape the clay slowly and carefully, while the modern approach often relies on molds. With unwavering dedication, Hanis shared,
"Seni warisan ni memang tak akan ditelan dek zaman. Untuk saya sendiri sebagai pengusaha labu sayong, saya nak labu sayong ni kekal relevan, lebih dikenali, dan itu tanggungjawab saya untuk memberi pendedahan kepada umum tentang kelebihan dan kebaikannya."
Through interactive programs and captivating stories like these, Kraft Hanis Labu Sayong is not just a business—it’s a mission to ensure this cultural heritage remains alive and continues to be cherished by both present and future generations.
